Aim

To learn about SCOP database.

Description

SCOP2 is a successor to the Structural Classification of Protein(SCOP) database. Similarly, to SCOP, the main focus of SCOP2 is to organize structurally characterized proteins according to their structural and evolutionary relationships. The main focus of SCOP2 is on knowledge based expert analysis and classification of proteins that are structurally characterized and deposited in the Protein Data Bank .The relationships of SCOP2 fall into four major categories: Protein types, Evolutionary events, Structural classes and Protein relationships. The first two categories do not have counter parts in SCOP.

 

Procedure

STEP 1: Access https://scop2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/

STEP 2: Type the protein of interest(kinase) and click search

STEP 3: Note down the fold, superfamily and family.

STEP 4: Select any one of the hit from the family.

STEP 5: Select any one of the hit from selected family and note down domain, species and family name of the protein

STEP 6: Note down the ancestral history and domain region in the sequence.

STEP 7: Save the page.

Result

Domain region of the given protein was retrieved.

  Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) Spongiform encephalopathies (SEs) are degenerative disorders of the brain that occur in a number of species. They are recognized by the clinical appearance of the affected animal and the characteristic histological changes they produce in the brain.  One of the common Spongiform encephalopathy is Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE),which mainly affect cattle.  Biological databases A database is a computerized archive used to store and organize data in such a way that information can be retrieved easily via a variety of search criteria. Databases are composed of computer hardware and software for data management. The chief objective of the development of a database is to organize data in a set of structured records to enable easy retrieval of information.
